Learn About Complex Trauma With New Path Counseling

New Path Counseling is proud to offer Complex Trauma Trainings in partnership with the Complex Trauma Training Consortium to healthcare providers, direct care staff, caregivers, and professionals. The Complex Trauma Training Consortium (CTTC) of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) and it is a workforce development and community training initiative aimed at establishing sustainable, national expertise in complex trauma understanding, assessment, and multidisciplinary response. Clinicians have been trained by leading experts and researchers in the complex trauma field. Training times vary between 1.5hours and 2hours in length, with the exception of Complex Trauma 101, which is 3 hours long. 

The National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative (NCTSI) grant through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and in partnership with Adelphi University, the Foundation Trust, the University of Chicago, and Alaska Behavioral Health.

Our Available Modules

Module 1: Complex Trauma 101

An introduction to Complex Trauma that covers types of trauma, physiology of trauma, ways complex trauma impacts development, and basic strategies that help people feel safer. Help participants think about their behaviors in a different way, learn how to create safe spaces for people with complex trauma, learn ways to explain to parents & kids what is going on

Module 2: Complex Trauma Domains of Impact

An in depth discussion of CT how it impacts children including: affect regulation, behavioral control, physical health, cognition, dissociation, self concept, attachment, and future orientation.

Module 3: Assessment of Complex Trauma

Focus on trauma informed screening and assessment through a CT lens, provide a comprehensive framework and tools to support treatment and service planning

Module 4: Complex Trauma, Systemic Racism, & BIPOC Impacted by Community Violence

Explore community violence takes a form of continuous traumatic stress. Discuss effects of chronic community violence, exposures, and interaction of complex trauma & systemic racism and culturally specific approaches for working with Black and Latino youth and families

Module 5: Complex Trauma and LGBTQ+ youth

Identify factors that impact the mental health and wellbeing of LGBTQ+ youth. This includes sociological-intersectionality focused considerations to form a more nuanced understanding of the unique needs that LGBTQ+ youth have. Provide practice based recommendations regarding approaches that may be helpful when providing care to this population

Module 6: Complex Trauma & Substance Use Disorders

Address how trauma creates a vulnerability to addiction and covers case examples of trauma responses and survival strategies in clients with substance use disorders. This includes discussion about the nervous system impacts of trauma and substance use and outlines trauma informed evidence based treatment models

Module 7: Provider Bias, Implicit Racism, and White Privilege

How unconscious attitudes and various forms of social privileges can impact care, provide opportunity for self reflection and techniques for mitigating implicit bias in provider/client interactions

Module 8: Complex Trauma, Schools, and Learning

Teach staff to take a trauma informed perspective to student behaviors. Understand student triggers, offer examples of effective responses that can be used to intervene with challenging student behaviors, explore areas for intervention 

Module 9: Use of Evidence Based Complex Trauma Interventions for Parents and Caregivers of children & Youth Impacted by Complex Trauma

Addresses caregivers’ needs and skills when working with childhood trauma. Includes techniques for engagement with caregivers, outlines strategies for guiding regulation, attunement, and effective response to child behaviors.

Module 10: Selecting the Complex Trauma EBP Treatment model that best matches the needs of your child and family

Provide overview of treatment models that are effective in complex trauma treatment, in addition to introducing various treatment methods and considerations for selecting treatment 

Module 11: Complex Trauma & Historical/Ancestral Trauma

Describe historical/ancestral trauma and its cumulative impacts and lessons that can be learned from indigenous communities about healing and resilience. How history and context are part of the whole person and should be taken into account when looking to understand experience and behavior. 

Module 12: Practical & Evidence-Based Intervention Strategies for Direct Care Staff in Residential Settings

-Describe how complex trauma manifests in residential treatment setting, describe team based therapeutic residential care, how complex trauma can interfere with youth development, how relational harm requires relational healing and how effective staff responses can promote youth safety, wellness, and resilience

Module 13: Practical & Evidence-Based Intervention Strategies for Direct Care Staff in Juvenile Justice Settings

Apply a complex trauma lens to “maladaptive” behaviors, identify and address common triggers among youth, and creating trauma informed environments

Module 14: Complex Trauma & Homeless & Runaway Youth

Understand how areas of intersectionality impact youth and homelessness, what are the biopsychosocial risk factor for homelessness, use the socioeconomical model to understand homelessness, and using the ARC framework as a trauma informed approach to help with interventions and treatment for homeless youth

Module 15: Complex Trauma & Pharmacotherapy

Identify utility of psychiatric medications in clinical treatment of complex trauma, review common medications used in treatment and describe role of medications for co-occurring conditions often associated with complex trauma.

Module 16: Complex Trauma & Caregivers with Unresolved Intergenerational Trauma

-We repeat what is familiar. Address why past personal trauma and intergenerational trauma matter in parenting. Identify potential caregiving challenges for individuals with trauma and provides strategies for self care and enhancing parent/child connection

Module 17: Complex trauma & Immigrant & Refugee Children & Families

Recognizing and addressing trauma that is identified within immigrant children and families, and being informed on the struggles of refugee children and families. Also teaching approaches that can be useful for these populations.

Module 18: Complex & Early Intervention

Understand how complex trauma looks like in young children and can change course of early childhood development. Also teach treatment targets and interventions for young children & caregivers.

Module 19: Complex Trauma & Neurobiology

The brain and body response to trauma is universal. Establish foundational understanding of what is happening in brain and body response to a perceived threat and help participants identify when a neurobiological response has been activated so we can better match intervention approaches in the moment 

Module 20: Guiding Clinical decision Making in Challenging Treatment Situations with Youth & Families Impacted by Complex Trauma

Explore challenges that face providers during critical moments with clients with complex trauma. Provide key principles and tactics for handling crises and preserving safety
